Israel is a small country located in the middle of a desert with natural water being scarce. In order to combat the water shortage, Israel has spent years studying, researching and developing technologies, using a lot of creativity to try to find alternative methods of water supply.
The Sea of Galilee is the country’s only natural source of water and in the past was responsible for supplying water to the whole of Israel from north to south. With the expansion and population increase, this single source began depleting and became unable to supply the entire growing population with the water needed to sustain the country.
Thanks to technology and the continuous research and development carried out here the main methods used today by Israel in the management of water resources are:
Desalination of sea water
One of the main strategies used to combat the crisis and water shortage was desalination. The country has built water desalination systems for the water that comes from the Mediterranean Sea, which is now the main source of water for domestic consumption.
Wastewater Recycling
Israel is one of the pioneer countries in the world to use the sewage collection and treatment technique, which is then used, for example, in methods such as drip irrigation in agricultural fields.
Drip Irrigation
This method alone is one of the most advanced irrigation systems, which Israel exports worldwide and ensures that water is not wasted when used in agriculture.
Education and Population Awareness
A conscious and well-informed population acts proactively to avoid excessive and unnecessary water consumption. Families have quotas of water consumption allowed based on the number of members per household whereby exceeding the quota increases the amount paid per cubic meter of water.
Undoubtedly, Israel today stands out and is recognized throughout the world as a nation that has overcome its deficits in natural water resources through constant investment in research, innovation and technology.
